Study in the UK — The Complete Guide for Indian Students (2025)

From Russell Group universities and Student visa requirements to the Graduate Route visa and Skilled Worker PR pathway — everything you need to know before you apply.

Why the UK?

Why Study in the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom is home to some of the world's most prestigious universities — Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL — and a higher education system that has shaped global leaders, Nobel laureates, and industry pioneers for centuries. For Indian students, a UK degree carries extraordinary brand value that opens doors across the world.

One of the UK's most compelling advantages is the shorter duration of its programmes. A UK bachelor's degree takes just 3 years (compared to 4 in India, Canada, or the USA), and most master's programmes are completed in just 1 year. This means you spend less time and money in education while still earning a globally recognised qualification.

The UK's Graduate Route visa — introduced in 2021 — allows international graduates to stay and work in the UK for 2 years after completing a bachelor's or master's degree, and 3 years for PhD graduates. This is a significant improvement over previous arrangements and makes the UK a far more attractive destination for career-focused Indian students.

The UK has a large, well-established Indian diaspora of over 1.8 million people, making it one of the most culturally familiar destinations for Indian students. Cities like London, Birmingham, Manchester, and Leicester have vibrant Indian communities, familiar food, and strong professional networks that can accelerate your career from day one.

Cost of Studying

Cost of Studying in the UK (in INR)

The UK is one of the more expensive study destinations, but the shorter programme duration (3-year UG, 1-year PG) means total costs are often comparable to or lower than Canada or Australia. London is significantly more expensive than other UK cities.

ExpenseEstimated Cost (INR/year)
Tuition (Undergraduate)₹20–35 lakhs/year
Tuition (Postgraduate)₹18–30 lakhs/year
Living Expenses (London)₹14–20 lakhs/year
Living Expenses (Outside London)₹10–14 lakhs/year
Total Estimate₹28–55 lakhs/year

Post-Study Work Rights

Graduate Route Visa (Post-Study Work)

The UK's Graduate Route visa — launched in July 2021 — is one of the most significant improvements to UK immigration policy in decades. It allows international students who have completed a UK bachelor's or master's degree to stay and work in the UK for 2 years after graduation, without needing a job offer in advance.

PhD graduates receive an even more generous 3-year Graduate Route visa, recognising the additional contribution of doctoral research to the UK economy. During this period, you can work in any job, at any skill level, for any employer — or even be self-employed. There are no restrictions on the type of work you can do.

The Graduate Route visa is not extendable, but it serves as a critical bridge to the Skilled Worker visa. If you secure a job offer from a UK employer at the required salary threshold during your Graduate Route period, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa — which is the main route to long-term residence and eventual PR in the UK.

PR Pathway

PR Pathway from the UK

The primary route to Permanent Residency (called Indefinite Leave to Remain, or ILR) in the UK for international graduates is through the Skilled Worker visa. After completing your Graduate Route visa period and securing a skilled job offer from a UK employer, you can switch to a Skilled Worker visa.

To qualify for a Skilled Worker visa, you need a job offer from a UK employer who holds a valid sponsor licence, at a salary meeting the minimum threshold (currently £26,200/year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher). The job must be at RQF Level 3 or above — which covers most graduate-level roles.

After living and working in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa for 5 continuous years, you become eligible to apply for ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain) — the UK's equivalent of permanent residency. After holding ILR for 12 months, you can apply for British citizenship. For Indian students with a long-term view, the UK offers a clear, if competitive, pathway to permanent settlement.
